Today is our youngest daughter Kaiah’s 12th birthday.

As I was baking her red velvet birthday cake she requested, my mind went back to July 2001
when she was a newborn. Within the first couple days, I noticed whenever I nursed her she
would choke on the milk.

That’s strange, I thought.

Naturally, I was very concerned, so I took her to see our family pediatrician, Dr. Leslie Clapp.
Once the examination got underway, everything appeared perfectly normal—that is, until the
doctor shined the light from her scope in baby Kaiah’s mouth.

Her shocked response clearly indicated something was wrong.

After a closer look, our doctor informed me that our daughter’s uvula—the dangling ball of
flesh that hangs from the soft palate in the back of the throat—was missing!  It had never
developed.

To confirm it, Dr. Clapp let
me have a look.

Sure enough, there was a big gaping hole in the back of Kaiah’s throat where her uvula
should
have been. For reasons the pediatrician couldn’t explain, she just so happened to be born
without one.

I had no answers and zero understanding of what was going on, or what to do about this
troubling condition.

With sad eyes, the doctor also told me there was absolutely nothing that could be done about
this birth defect that, according to her, Kaiah would have to live with for the rest of her life. This
meant she would have difficulty eating and swallowing, and perhaps some other challenges,
because the uvula helps guide the flow of fluid and food down the esophagus.

As much as I wanted to, there was no way I could heal what was wrong. I remember crying
when I watched Kaiah struggle to eat. Sometimes, she would just refuse her milk altogether,
because she couldn't swallow without choking. She would cough so violently that her face
would turn red and end with screams of frustration and hunger.

I felt so helpless.

Feeling outdone, discouraged and desperately wanting our newborn daughter to get the
nourishment she needed, my husband Kenya and I fasted and prayed. We asked our families
to pray also. And we believed God.

At first, nothing got better. But we kept on standing in faith.

Well, a few weeks later, I noticed that baby Kaiah wasn't choking anymore when she nursed.
Excited, I thanked God that she had learned to work around her disability. So I took her back to
the doctor's office and shared the good news, that our baby girl was functioning just fine
without that old uvula.

But I was wrong.

When Dr. Clapp looked inside her mouth, her eyes bulged and her brown face turned ghost-
white. When I saw the horrified look, instantly, I got scared.

"Get over here!" she said without looking up.

"Look!" she motioned to me to peer inside Kaiah’s mouth while she shined the light. Once I got
my focus right, I knew what the commotion was about. I couldn't believe my eyes either. There,
in place of that hole, was a uvula.

Dr. Clapp told me that, in more than thirty years of practicing medicine, she had never seen a
case like this Kaiah’s. If a child didn’t have it at birth, it would be that way forever. “God worked
a creative miracle,” she told me, fascinated as I told her all about how our family had been
praying.

As you might imagine, I gave God glory right in that office.

Friend, 12 years and counting, Kaiah has never had any more trouble with her uvula. She’s
strong, healthy, and
loves to eat.

Today, I shared this testimony to let you know, no matter what you’re going through, how bad it
looks, what doctors say, or what statistically is the case, God is greater than any obstacle. He’s
bigger than your trouble. And He’s more powerful than the fiercest opposition.

Everything you see around you might say that it’s over and things are only going to get worse.
But you’re reading this right now, as God’s way of remind you that He’s a miracle-worker.
Trust Him for your miracle. Believe Him for breakthrough. Expect a positive outcome from this
negative situation. There is no disaster, debacle, or difficultly that challenges our great God.
There is no problem or conundrum that could ever stump Him. He is not confused by this
situation, nor is he unable to deliver.

Just like my husband Kenya and I did, put some prayer on that situation and believe the Lord
to work it out.

Others my say it’s too far gone, but for God, nothing is too hard.

To remind you of this, I’m stirring Jeremiah 32:27 NIV into your cup of inspiration, which says, "I
am the LORD, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?”

You already know the answer to that question.

So when you drink down the contents of your cup, don’t focus on your inability to change the
circumstance, but our miracle-working God’s unlimited ability to do the impossible.

Now, let’s pray.

Life can leave us parched, but Jesus can quench
our thirst.
