Yesterday, while riding along with my husband, I noticed a sign on the right-hand side of the
street flashing our vehicle’s speed, which was within the city limit. But, before that moment, I
could not ever recall seeing such a sign hanging on a pole, with digital numbers blinking.
“When did the city install that?” I asked Kenya, eyeing the high tech speed sign sitting on
Parkside Avenue.
“Oh, about a couple weeks ago,” he answered casually.
“A couple weeks?” I repeated, confused. “How did I not notice that?” I asked aloud, wondering
how I’d missed something so obvious along a road I use pretty frequently.
“Residents had been complaining of speeding in this area for a while,” he continued, so our
city’s Police Commissioner and Mayor finally unveiled the new signage.
The idea is to create awareness in drivers of how fast we’re going, to encourage us to slow
down if we are, in fact, exceeding the recommended velocity for that stretch of road.
But what good does it do if others, like me (before yesterday) aren’t even aware of the warning
sign? How can it help, if motorists don’t notice the bright orange numbers, designed to tell us
when we are dangerously over the speed limit?
Simply put, it doesn’t.
There is no way we can seize upon an opportunity to redirect our course if we never
acknowledge or recognize a warning that something about what we are doing is off. This is
true, both naturally and spiritually.
There are times when God will allow certain manifestations to happen in our lives to alert us of
something we need to focus on and pay attention to.
Some signs point toward good things, while other signs, are a foreshadowing of bad things.
Either way, when we walk closely enough with God, He will reveal all necessary things to us.
No matter how aloof or unobservant we may naturally be, if we develop our spiritual walk
through prayer, consecration, and sanctification, the Lord will help us see important truths we
might otherwise miss.
This is especially important in dry seasons, when things look dark and bleak, as if they will
never get better. Naturally speaking, every indicator may seemingly point toward gloom, doom,
more drought, and famine.
But spiritually, God can show you that the rain is coming, even if everything around you has
been dried up for too long.
It reminds me of 1 Kings 8:41-45, when Elijah told King Ahab that God was about to send rain.
It didn’t seem likely, specifically, not after Elijah sent his servant who came back and told him
he didn’t see any signs of precipitation.
Nevertheless, the prophet sent him back seven times, seemingly, with no success.
Oh, but on the seventh time, the Bible says, the servant told Elijah, “There is a cloud, as small
as a man’s hand, rising out of the sea!”
There was the sign.
Sure enough, the sky turned black with clouds and wind, and Elijah told Ahab, before a single
raindrop ever fell, hurry up, prepare your chariot, before you get drenched in rain.
Today, I want to let you know, no matter how dry and unfruitful things have been, friend, the
rain is coming in your life. Get your umbrella. Prepare your house and fix your mind to receive
what’s on the way.
To help you do this, I’m stirring the words of Elijah, from the latter portion of 1 Kings 8:41 into
your cup of inspiration. It says, “…there is the sound of abundance of rain.”
When you drink down the contents of your cup, my prayer is that you will begin seeing the
signs in the spiritual, that are not necessarily evident or visible in the natural. May God open
your eyes to the “evidence of things not seen” as you walk by faith, not by sight.
Good days are ahead for you.
The rain is on its way.
Now let’s pray.
