I could hear his screams above everyone else’s.
It was our 7-year-old Kaleb’s first time on a ride at an amusement park that thrust him high in
the air while whirling around and around.
Though I had some misgivings about letting him go on the ride that piqued his interest, I didn’t
want to deprive him of his chance to experience the “Haymaker” at Darien Lake in Western NY.
Who knows? He might like it, I thought to myself.
Ha! Not so much.
Despite the fact that I’d warned our eager son, saying, “Kaleb, once the ride begins you can’t
get off it, even if you don’t like it,” he insisted.
I added, “If you scream and holler, still, the operator won’t stop it. So, are you sure you want to
get on that?”
He was certain of his decision.
You should have seen how excited he was, at first. But when the Haymaker got started, oh
boy, it wasn’t pretty.
There I was, gazing up, seeing the look of terror on his face, listening to his piercing pleas to
“Let me off!” and feeling so sorry for him. After all, as one seriously lacking the “adventure
gene,” I’m not too big on thrill-seeking either, so I could sympathize with the little guy.
I remember the first time I got on a rollercoaster after being pressured into it by classmates on
a school fieldtrip. Once I heard “Enjoy your ride” and began advancing forward, fear gripped
my heart.
By the time I had been jerked back and forth, whipped around the track, hiked up into the air
slowly, and then dropped for what seemed like an eternity, I thought I was about to meet Jesus
early.
I cried and yelled with all I had for someone, anyone, to be merciful enough to get me off that
death trap. But, no one came to my rescue. Panicked and all, I survived.
So did Kaleb.
So will you.
You see, life can feel a lot like a terrifying ride at an amusement park. Initially, in your naïveté,
you feel prepared and perfectly excited about what’s to come. You strap in and get set to enjoy
the ride.
Only thing is, after things get underway, the road turns out to be a lot bumpier than you
thought. The highs are higher and the lows are a whole lot lower than you expected.
Before you can get your wits about you, you’re rocked back and forth, begging for it all to stop.
But everything doesn’t come to a halt just because you don’t like the way it feels.
You just have to endure it.
Just when you think you can’t take it anymore, you look up and realize you survived, despite
the unpleasant process. You emerge from it all somewhat shaken up, but still standing.
Can you relate?
If so, this word is for you. It has come to remind you that you may be dealing with some
struggles, difficulties, setbacks, and rocky places. Yet, my friend, you will make it through. The
process might be a lot harder than you anticipated, but you won’t be defeated by it, because
the Lord is with you.
To remind you of this truth, today, I’m stirring 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 NIV into your cup of
inspiration. It says, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in
despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”
When you drink down the contents of your cup, you will recognize that no matter how great the
difficulty, the Greater One lives inside you. Through Him you can handle it; survive it; thrive in
the middle of it; and come out of it better, stronger, and even more confident in the Lord of
your salvation.
No matter what it feels like, you will get through this victoriously.
Now let’s pray.

God, I had another vision for the way things would go in my life. I never thought I
would have to deal with these tests and trials I’m facing. While I’m going through it,
I often feel like I won’t make it, as if I can’t survive. But thank You for reminding me
that Your word declares I can do all things through You, my strength, help, and
refuge. When I feel weakest, teach me to lean on You and trust You to bring me
through. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
