The day before, earlier in the afternoon, he was feeling lethargic, complaining of a headache
and sleeping a lot. But by that evening, our youngest son Kaleb was back to normal.
The next day, his body temperature was elevated.
Uh-oh, I thought.
A fever is typically a foreshadowing of worse things to come. Immediately, I wondered what
invisible virus or germ invasion was causing his little body to work feverishly (no pun intended)
to ward off.
So I asked, “Are you feeling okay, honey? Does anything hurt?”
“I feel fine,” he told me.
His appetite was healthy. His energy levels seemed as high as usual, although his eyes
appeared somewhat sunken in and weak.
Though concerned, with no symptoms beyond a mild fever, I kept an eye on him to see if any
additional signs of illness would manifest. Beyond that, there was really nothing much left to do.
The following morning, the fever had completely vanished. But then, our youngest daughter,
Kaiah, developed a slight cough and began complaining of a sore, scratchy throat.
In the wee hours of the next day, Kaleb moped into my bedroom looking pitiful.
“My throat doesn’t feel very good,” he mumbled scratchily, with drooping shoulders, watery
eyes, and flushed cheeks.
Finally, the invisible affliction manifested. Though I could not tell what was going on previously,
I knew, eventually, whatever was happening inside would show up on the outside.
Our family doctor often says when a virus infiltrates the body it can take several days—
sometimes, weeks—to develop into recognizable symptoms.
This makes me think about the fact that, just because we cannot see it, does not mean nothing
is occurring. Even when good things are on the verge of breaking forth in our lives, we cannot
know with certainty exactly when, how, where, or what will take place, or even who God will use
in our lives to help get it done.
There are seasons when, all we have is a deep inner-knowing or a few cues that breakthrough
is on the way.
I’m reminded of the pre-dawn sky, with slight color variation being the only indicator that
daybreak is just moments away. Similarly, God often moves in subtle ways.
Do you remember in 1 Kings 19:11-13, when the Prophet Elijah was on the run from Jezebel,
and was instructed to go to the mountain, where God was going to pass by?
Well, the Bible says, there was a great wind that came so forcefully that it shattered the rocks.
But God wasn’t in the wind. Then, there was a mighty earthquake, but God wasn’t in the
earthquake either. After that, there was a raging fire, but yet, God wasn’t in the fire.
At last, there was a still small voice—a whisper—and that, my friend, was how God chose to
meet with Elijah on the mountain.
You see, sometimes, we are looking for some great big showing, a spectacular sign, or a
momentous occasion to announce that God is working in our lives.
But often, it is in life’s subtleties that we see the Lord moving by His power.
Don’t miss His voice; overlook His favor; dismiss His blessings; or shrug off His many benefits,
because His goodness didn’t come packaged the way you expected. Instead, begin opening
your eyes and seeing His tender mercies and manifold rewards all around you.
You are already blessed. Not only that, but God has even more in store for you. Just be
patient. Stay faithfully committed in your walk. Continue believing and remaining full of
expectation.
To remind you to do this, I’m stirring an encouraging scripture found in Proverbs 23:18 ESV
into your cup of inspiration. It simply says this: “Surely there is a future, and your hope will not
be cut off.”
When you drink down the contents of your cup, you will be empowered to know that when you
place your trust and confidence in the Lord, and walk according to His will, you can rest
assured that good things are on the way for you.
This blog post today is just one other way God’s “still, small voice” is letting you know
breakthrough is coming.
As Jeremiah 29:11 NIV says, “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans
to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”
His plans are underway. Just wait on Him
