First Lady and ‘Hollywood Exes’ Star Sheree Fletcher Talks
Christians and Reality TV
By Beth Morissi::  EEW Magazine Entertainment Reporter

Sheree Fletcher, ex-wife of superstar actor Will Smith and First Lady of City of Hope International and the
Director of WOW! Women on the Wall Ministries, says church members weren’t originally sold on the idea of
her life being featured on VH1’s reality TV show “Hollywood Exes.”

According to the
Christian Post via America Preachers, "They were concerned about me doing a reality show,
with being a pastor's wife, having a congregation and being a first lady, and rightfully so because there was
nothing out there like the show that we have," said Fletcher.

VH1’s original programming like “Basketball Wives” and the “Love & Hip Hop” franchise, feature plenty of
fighting, cussing, hair-pulling and all-around barbarism. What reason would anyone have to believe that a docu-
series following the lives of marginally famous divorcées would be a model of civility? If anything, it would seem
like a recipe for disaster.

And yet, Fletcher and her co-stars have largely managed to escape the stereotypical drama of stigmatized
reality TV, though the programming is by no means without controversy of some sort.

With all the attention Hollywood celebrity brings to the doorstep, it's easy to get lost in it. But, according to
Fletcher, the bright lights don't affect her too much. "I don't take fame seriously, it's a default kind of thing. I
didn't pursue it, it kind of comes with the territory. I feel this is a part of what God has called me to do, this
reality show is a part of my journey."

Before setting out on the high-profile road of entertainment, though, the mom who famously co-parents her 21-
year-old son Trey with Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith sought divine guidance. "I liked the concept of the show but I
prayed on it, I took it to prayer and I had a peace about it,” she explained.

“You know you have to stay prayed up doing a reality show. And even though our reality show is tame in
comparison to some that are out there, you still have to keep Him first.”

Christian Post reports that, previously, Fletcher attended Bishop Noel Jones' church, a fellow Christian who will
soon be starring in an upcoming controversial reality show of his own, "Preachers of L.A."

So, what does
she think about it?

“People that are in leadership positions in Christianity – most people know that we are human and that we are
going to fall short, but they don't want to see it," she said during her video interview.

"It might be empowering for some and disappointing for others. I don't know where it's going to land but I'm
praying that it's well received and that it helps more than it hurts."
