(EEW Magazine) Controversy has been brewing around Reach Records CEO and Grammy® winning rapper
Lecrae Moore, 34, for quite a while.
Many have taken aim at the Christian MC for rejecting the “Christian rap” label, assuming he is distancing
himself from Jesus for mainstream appeal. But Lecrae says, not so.
“A lot of people think that because I don’t like the title Christian rapper that I’m somehow ashamed of my faith,”
he said during an interview on SiriusXM Satellite Radio show “Sway In the Morning” hosted by DJ Sway
Calloway.

During the conversation, the rapper discussed his upcoming Anomaly album, how he handles groupies, as well
as other personal questions the host tossed his way.
“I have no qualms about being ashamed of what I believe in or embarrassed to say Jesus or none of that type
of stuff,” said the “Nuthin” rapper, adding, “but I don’t like music to be categorized.”
In the early days of his career, Lecrae’s underground base grew accustomed to his theologically heavy verses,
often interjecting scripture, Christian doctrine and overt faith themes into the music.
Nowadays, the Atlanta-based artist says he has evolved and wishes to discuss broader topics in his rhymes
and all of them don’t have to do with his Christian beliefs.
“My faith is my faith, but music is music and I want everybody to hear it, not just Christians,” he explained.
When Lecrae was awarded the “Best Gospel Album” Grammy for his album Gravity in 2012, it elevated his
profile. Since that time, his steady ascent to the top of the Christian Hip Hop heap has not stopped.
He stands peerless within the Christian genre in terms of mainstream recognition and crossover appeal.
According to Lecrae, heightened levels of popularity bring along with it heightened levels of scrutiny from
individuals who think they know how he should behave.
“They want me to be perfect and they want me to fit they mold of what they think I should look like instead of
just realizing I got my walk to run.”
He continued, “We all running our own race. You gotta run your race. So, I’m running mine. You run yours,
‘cause at the end of the day, God ain’t gon’ judge you by how I ran my race. He gon’ deal with you by how you
did yours. I can’t fit everybody’s standards.”
Lecrae also shared one of the quotes he lives by, which is, “If you live for people’s acceptance, you’ll die from
their rejection.”
