TD Jakes Talks Mega Fest On TODAY Show: ‘We’re Trying
To Strengthen Families On All Levels’
By AV White:: EEW Magazine News
The Mega Fest promotional blitz continues. The latest stop for Bishop TD Jakes, founder of the festival, is the
“Today” show with Kathee Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb.
During the brief interview segment, the Dallas leader explained what to expect at the 3-day event which seeks
to bridge the divide between children and absent fathers.
“We’re trying to strengthen families on all levels,” said Jakes, who believes fatherlessness is the main culprit
when it comes to the breakdown of the American family.
“Women grow up playing house, with dolls, you’ve had a lot of experience with that,” he said of seeing what it
means to be a good parent. For men, however, the charismatic speaker said, “It has never been modeled to
us.”
During MegaFest, he plans to take on the issue more in depth through Oprah’s Lifeclass, which will be entirely
devoted to encouraging dads to step up.
Jakes cited the statistic that approximately 70 percent of children grow up in fatherless homes, noting there is
also a growing epidemic among whites and Hispanics.
“I think we have to model it (fatherhood) to men in such a way that they see the benefit of it and they’re not
intimidated to develop a relationship with a child outside of the mother,” he continued.
“Because, sometimes, the relationship with the mother doesn’t work, but you can’t divorce the kid.”
