Russell Crowe Slams ‘Noah’ Critics: Says Backlash Is ‘Bordering
On Absolute Stupidity’ [VIDEO]
Darren Aronofsky's film adaptation of the Biblical story of Noah, set to hit theaters March 28, created
controversy in the faith community over its non-literal translation. The brouhaha has caused some, even before
seeing it, to rail against the film.

But the Oscar-winning star of the movie, Russell Crowe, is annoyed with the backlash and is letting it be known
that he thinks the hullabaloo is pretty dumb.

In an interview with Good Morning America’s Robin Roberts, he said, "We've had probably over a year now of
very harsh criticism from a bunch of people who have put their name and stamp on an opinion that's not even
based on the movie or seeing the movie.”

Crowe argues that the foundation of the strong opinions against
Noah are “just an assumption of what it could
be, or how bad it could be, or how wrong it could be in their eyes, which I think quite frankly is bordering on
absolute stupidity,” he laughed, “because now, people are seeing the movie and they're realizing how
respectful it is and how potent it is.”

The respect factor is what many of the critics within the faith community are questioning. Is a movie which alters
the message of the scriptural text respectful to the integrity of the Bible?

So great has the outcry been against the $125 million movie that Paramount's executives agreed to add a
disclaimer to marketing materials admitting that the on screen depiction is not completely in lockstep with
sacred Scripture.

“The film is inspired by the story of Noah. While artistic license has been taken, we believe that this film is true
to the essence, values, and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide.
The biblical story of Noah can be found in the book of Genesis,” says the statement.

The disclaimer was added in hopes of diffusing a controversy that could potentially hurt ticket sales and sink
the ship on opening weekend.

Citing the benefits of going to see the movie, Crowe told GMA, “You come out of this movie and you want to talk
and [there is a long list of] all the subjects you want to talk about: our stewardship of the earth; our relationship
to animals; what is spirituality; who am I in this world?—all these fantastic subjects for conversation. It’s a great
piece of art.”

But the unhappy members of the faith community are not interested in art for art’s sake. They want to see an
adaptation that is well done and as close to the literal interpretation of Scripture as possible, keeping creative
license very restricted.
