Robin Roberts Doesn’t Care What You Think About Her Being
Gay: ‘You Gotta Live Your Life’
Shock followed by disappointment. This best describes the feelings of a collective group of conservative
Christians across America following 53-year-old Good Morning America anchor, Robin Roberts’ coming out as
gay on Facebook in December 2013.
While reactions have been mixed—some supportive, some not—when it comes to those who do not agree, the
popular media personality’s response is, “I don't care — you gotta live your life.”
In an interview with Good Housekeeping Magazine, Roberts put forth her views on faith and homosexuality
based on something her late mother Lucimarian Tolliver Roberts, who died in August 2012 at the age of 88,
said.
“My mother always said, ‘God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didn't do,’”
she explained.
Disobeying the teachings of the Bible, which clearly expresses that homosexuality is a sin, while openly claiming
to be a Christ-follower, creates a bit of a conundrum in the minds of individuals that hold a biblically compatible
view of sexuality.
But not so in Roberts’ case. She does not see it as a contradiction.
“Shortly after I posted about my relationship with Amber on Facebook last year, I showed a picture of us with my
niece — who'd gotten married in Baton Rouge, LA — on GMA,” Roberts told the magazine. “It was like a
beautiful family picture. I was so moved that people got it and said, ‘You're happy.’”
Not everyone did.
“Others, though, were asking, ‘Why didn't you say something about her before? Why are you only recognizing
her now?’ News flash: Some people like their anonymity. This is what's right for me. Love is love, and I'm
grateful to have that.”
So then, how does the cancer survivor address people who are confused about her profession of Christianity
and a homosexual lifestyle that flies in the face of what the Bible says is right?
In what way does she reconcile sharing her life and bed with her girlfriend of 10 years, Amber, and the
confusion it causes related to matters of faith?
“Sometimes there's a stigma attached to how people view you if you're living a certain way,” said Roberts, but
that does not matter to her she claimed.
“You gotta find what happiness is and what it means for you, and you can't get caught up in what someone is
saying about you on Twitter. You don't go through a year like I did to not be happy and not make your own
choices.”
Last year, Roberts shared her harrowing battle against breast cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a
disease of the blood and bone marrow that was once known as preleukemia.
Her fight and victory against the deadly disease has inspired millions. Her coming out story, on the other hand,
has left millions confused and uninspired.
