In a new interview with Huffington Post, gospel singer Kierra Sheard gets emotional about her wayward sibling,
J. Drew Sheard II.
With tears in her eyes she said, "There are people out there like my brother, who are probably just tired of
church people and the judgment and the negativity.”
The full exclusive chat, which will soon air on interviewer Kian Brown’s YouTube channel, covers the 27-year-
old vocalist’s music, forthcoming Eleven60 clothing line, budding entertainment empire and more.
J. Drew, who first shocked the world in 2013 by ditching gospel in favor of recording and releasing racy R&B
songs, has been criticized for abandoning his faith roots.
“I come from this gospel background [so] everybody expects me to pretty much live a perfect life or do things in
the lane of my mom and dad,” he told Christian Post. “It’s just all about coming out of that box and coming out of
those four walls and just being you,”
Coming out of that box, has essentially placed him in the category of someone who is lost or “backslidden” in the
minds of staunch Christians.
In an effort to reel those who, like her brother and producer, have strayed, Kierra said she has opted for an
edgier, more contemporary sound, while staying true to the gospel message.
“This is my way of presenting Jesus in a different way, in a fresh way, in a way I think he has called me to present
him,” she explained.
The Bold! Right! Life! youth organization founder is hopeful that her current sound and culturally current vibe
will bring in a harvest of souls the church is rapidly losing.
According to Barna Research, six in 10 young people will leave the church permanently or for an extended
period starting at age 15.
The reason?
One-fourth of 18- to 29-year-olds say church demonizes everything outside church, including the music, movies,
culture, and technology that define their generation.
