At only 56 years old, Louisiana Pastor Kenneth Green leaves behind a mourning wife, three children and an entire church congregation.
The leader of Greater Saint Mary Baptist Church in Algiers collapsed and died Sunday in the middle of his sermon. His last words: “If the Lord called me now I'm ready to go.”
One of his members, Joan Martin, sat stunned in the pew, crying.
"He took a swallow of water. Before he took water he wiped his face and then he looked up and it looked like his eyes were rolled back, like there was no life in his eyes,” she told WDSU News 6. “He tumbled over. Everybody was in a state of shock people were crying.”
By the time the paramedics arrived, Green, who had been pastoring St. Mary Baptist Church for eight years, had passed on.
"They were trying to resuscitate him but it took so long I think we knew he was gone," she explained.
Green is described as kind and giving, one who supported others, prayed for them, took the sick to the hospital and helped the homeless.
“He always had an encouraging word to say," said Martin.
His uplifting words are now a mere memory that will, hopefully, comfort Martin’s family, congregants and friends through this dark season.
During his last ever preached message Sunday, Green was expounding upon the Psalm of David in a sermon titled, “Down But Not Out: How to Press Forward In The Midst of Trials”—a fitting message for the dark days of mourning his loved ones will face.
When it comes to Pastor Green’s legacy, faithful member Martin said, "Remember his love for God and the work he did for God, and how he tried to be everything for everybody," said Martin.
