Pretending To Be Happy To Save Face? It’s Time To Take Off The
Mask
By Dianna Hobbs
Boy, don’t we know how to put on a happy face and pretend nothing is wrong? Aren’t we pros at acting as if
everything is fine and dandy in our world when we know we’re bleeding on the inside?
This is a learned behavior.
When babies and toddlers injure themselves, everyone in close proximity is going to know it. They just let the
screams rip and the tears flow. Little ones don’t worry at all about how they look, how someone else will feel
about their expression of pain, or whether this is the right place to release an anguished wail.
In our infancy, neither did we.
But over time, as we adapted socially and learned that emotional outbursts are not appropriate in certain
contexts, we managed to stifle cries, feign happiness, exhibit strength and project joy, when everything in us is
hurting.
Sometimes, we forget to get rid of that façade. We bring that hardened, polished, got-it-all-together demeanor
into the presence of the Lord.
But we don’t have to pretend with God.
We don’t need to put on airs, deny our true feelings and conceal our heartbreaks. After all, He knows the truth
anyway.
So when we have had all we can take and the cares of this world get to be too much, we can strip off the mask
in His presence, cry out to the Lord and let Him heal, help, comfort and nurture us back to health.
When we come to Him, He doesn’t want a politically correct, eloquently stated, neatly packaged, by-the-book
prayer containing all the things we think we’re supposed to say.
No.
If we can’t do anything but say, “Oh God, this is too much, help me!” that’s enough.
There are instances when we can do nothing but cry. We can’t even find the words to utter because our hearts
are so heavy.
That’s okay too.
Just go to Him. He already knows your needs. Matthew 6:8 says, “For your Father knows what you need before
you ask him.”
Romans 8:26 NIV says, “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought
to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
In the King James version of the Bible, the latter half of that scripture says, “The Spirit itself maketh intercession
for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
Today, be encouraged to know that God hears even your faintest cries. If you can’t do anything but moan, He
hears and will answer.
If you are burdened, struggling, in distress, wounded, going through, and in need of help from God, here’s what
you do: follow the instructions in Matthew 6:6-7 NIV.
It says, “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then
your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like
pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.”
Go ahead and find a secret place. Don’t try to find the right words to say.
Just get honest, personal, transparent, open and vulnerable.
Some of the best cries I’ve ever had, were not on the shoulders of friends, but in the arms of the Savior.
He’s waiting for you.
Now let’s pray.
God, sometimes I’m going through so much, I can’t even find the right words to say. Thank You for letting
me know that there are no right words and all I need to do is open my heart to You and You will hear me.
So today, I’m crying out to You, oh Lord. ‘Please help me’ is the cry of my heart. I believe You have
already heard me in my distress and will help me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
