Earlier, I was reflecting on what God did for my sister.
“It sounded like bombs were going off behind me,” my younger sister Alesha told me in the
beginning of the year. “I couldn’t see anything, but I could hear the sound getting closer to me.”
The booms were not from explosives, though.
The loud, terrifying noises resulted from a massive car pileup on the thruway where she was
traveling to work in a blizzard. The strong wind gusts here in Buffalo, our hometown, caused
thick blankets of snow to swirl around in the air, reducing the visibility to zero.
“It was like someone had thrown a white sheet over all my car windows,” she explained, still a
bit shaken up from the incident.
The nearest exit was about three miles up the road Alesha was told by the woman at the toll
booth, which seemed more like 3,000 miles in those conditions!
Terrified, she inched forward, unable to make out anything around her.
She phoned our dad and told him what was going on. All the while, the ominous crashing
sounds continued. She knew it was only a matter of time before—Boom!
Sure enough, she was hit by a tractor trailer.
Yes.
A. Tractor. Trailer.
And since I’m telling you that she was telling me about it, we know she survived.
Look at God.
But, back to the incident.
When the semi-trailer rammed her from behind, the impact was so great, it blew her windows
out. The trunk was suddenly in her back seat. The airbags failed to deploy and she smashed
her head on the steering wheel.
The phone flew out of her hand.
Understandably, Alesha was hysterical.
The vehicle behind her flipped over and caught fire.
Still, she could see nothing. She wasn’t even sure of her exact location. So she screamed out,
“Daddy! Daddy!”
But he could do nothing to rescue her.
Disoriented and fearful, Alesha got out of the car and was wandering around.
Thank God a kind stranger told her to get back in the car and get out of the road. He even
hopped inside her wrecked vehicle and moved it out of the flow of traffic. Had he not, the
results could have been even more disastrous.
Even when Alesha composed herself enough to dial 911, they could not even find her.
Ambulance trucks, after taking a very long time to get there, drove right by her vehicle. They
could not see, just as she and other motorists could not.
Cold, lost, injured and unsure of whether she would be hit again as the banging commotion
continued, my sister said she felt “helpless.”
When emergency workers failed to come through, her heart sank.
While this was happening, I had no idea.
That day, I was home sick, in bed, coughing and in rough shape. My voice was almost
completely gone, but the Lord laid it on my heart to pick up the phone and call my father.
So I did.
When he answered, I gave him a husky “hello” and immediately heard the worried sound in his
voice.
“What’s going on?” I asked in between coughs.
That’s when he told me, “Your sister is out there right now and she has no idea where she is.”
When I hung up, I prayed, not knowing any further details of the situation.
I knew that even if we didn’t know how to help Alesha, there is someone who sits high and
looks low who knows all things, and is more than able.
I called on the name of the Lord.
Well, finally, a police officer discovered her and gave her a lift to the ambulance trucks. When
the officers realized she had been run into by a tractor trailer, they were in awe that she was
standing before them.
Alesha told me that when she arrived at the hospital, there were so many injured people there.
They were lining the halls and walls on stretchers and in wheelchairs, waiting to be seen. The
emergency staff was overwhelmed with patients.
Praise God the Greatest Physician took care of my baby sister in her time of need.
Yes, she was very sore and somewhat unnerved, but she is still here.
I’m so grateful I called my father when the Lord led me to do it. Even though I was feeling not-
so-great and was powerless, in my own strength, to fix the problem, there was something I
could do: pray.
There is power in prayer.
You see, when Alesha called out “Daddy!” our natural father couldn’t do anything, oh but our
Heavenly Father, when we called on Him, came to her aid.
As the saying goes, “Prayer changes things.”
And as the Scripture says in the latter part of James 5:16, which is what I’m stirring into your
cup of inspiration today, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
Friend, as you drink down the contents of your cup, you will be reminded that no matter how
helpless you feel, or how hopeless it looks, God is a very present help in trouble. When you
are out of options, He isn’t.
Though people may fail you and accidentally overlook you in your time of need—whether
intentionally or accidentally—the Lord sees you. He cares and will come to your rescue.
Right now, whatever you may be going through, know that you are not alone. God is there.
You might not see your way clearly, but if you just call on His name—Jesus—He will supply
your every need.
Now let’s pray.
