Evangelist Alveda King says before you turn on the news,

There is so much going on in the world and it’s easy to become distracted by it all, but Evangelist
Alveda King, niece of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has some advice.

Before you turn on the news and try to face the ills of the world, read the word of God, pray and
fortify your spirit first.

“Earlier last week I had turned on the TV to national news before I read my Bible verses for the
day,” admits the pro-life activist, 66.

She continues, “Usually I try not to do this because I need daily heavenly fortification to help me
face the problems of the world. However, that morning I overrode my daily regimen of Matthew 6.”

By getting out of her routine, the Director of
Civil Rights for the Unborn, the African-American
outreach of Priests for Life, says by not guarding her heart, she essentially opened herself up to
become frustrated and emotionally triggered by all she was seeing and hearing.

But then, Evangelist King had a realization: Instead of placing her hope and expectations in
government, she needed to place confidence in the Lord and seek
Him.

“As I was slipping into emotional reactions, I came to my senses, turned off the television and
began to pray 1 Timothy 2:1-3,” she recalls.

That scripture Evangelist King referenced says: “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,
intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people—for kings and all those in authority, that
we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God
our Savior.”

In other words, prayer is the key.

So if you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, emotional and upset over the political climate, the
negative and relentless media coverage of controversy, and the divisiveness currently ripping
our nation apart, it’s time to do something about it.

Here are 5 things Evangelist King recommends:

    1. Don't turn on the TV before prayer and Bible reading.

    2. Turn off the TV and radio and social media and human conversation; pray when your
emotions get ahead of your spirit.

    3. Pray with encouraging partners who can uplift with unbiased input.

    4. Avoid all strife. Love and forgive. Seek highest ground of Agape love as well as
    nonviolent conflict resolution.

    5. Spend quality time with God.

Do you feel yourself becoming upset and bothered by the polarizing arguments about politics?

Are your personal views and reactions rooted in the word of God, or have you allowed media to
bait and trigger you, and the current state of our world to distract you?

If you feel overwhelmed, get prayer. Our prayer team is waiting to stand with you so you can
regain your focus and be led by God in this season.
