TD JAKES: ‘You Don’t Need Iyanla to Fix your Life’
Though many respect Iyanla Vanzant, 60 year old host of “Iyanla: Fix My Life” on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN
Network, not everyone believes the spiritual leader can live up to the title of her show—namely, Bishop T.D.
Jakes.
On Sunday morning, Feb. 16, during an altar call at his The Potter’s House, the 56-year-old Dallas mega
pastor, known for being outspoken on pop culture issues, said, “You don’t need Iyanla to fix your life.”
His statement, which was met with applause, was not a direct indictment against Vanzant, though it could be
taken that way, but rather, a small part of a larger point.
In context, the popular pastor, who has toured with both Vanzant and Oprah as part of the media mogul's
“Lifeclass,” was discussing the supernatural power of Jesus Christ and how only the son of God could truly fix
anyone.
“Salvation is free. You don’t have to labor for it. You don’t have to fix up for it. You don’t have change yourself
and then come and present yourself worthy to come,” Jakes said.
“You can come a wretch undone. You can come with liquor on your breath and crack in your veins, and cocaine
up your nose. But if you come with your sincere heart and lay before Him and say fix my life [He will].”
He continued, “You don’t need Iyanla to fix your life—you need Jesus to fix your life. Oprah can’t do it. TD Jakes
can’t do it. Dr. Phil can’t do it. But I know a man from Galilee. If you’re in sin He’ll set you free.”
Despite the transforming power of Christ, however, some people who already know Jesus still go to Vanzant for
practical tools and help dealing with troubling problems.
In 2013, the gospel singing group “The Anointed Pace Sisters” shocked the faith community after revealing
dark family secrets on Fix My Life.
Vanzant was also responsible for breaking the story that DeJuaii Pace struggled with attraction to other women
and believes she is gay.
