Kudos: Barack and Michelle Obama Praise CVS for Discontinuing
Sale of Cigarettes
When CVS announced that it would be willing to dump $2 billion in revenue by halting the sale of cigarettes,
some gasped in disbelief. But when you think about the fact that the retail chain stands to earn a whopping
$134 billion this year, you realize the loss is really just a drop in the bucket.

Still, ditching the “cancer sticks” in all 7,600 stores is a bold move—one that has grabbed the attention of
President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama.

In a statement, the president said this healthy shift "will help advance my Administration's efforts to reduce
tobacco-related deaths, cancer, and heart disease, as well as bring down health care costs — ultimately saving
lives and protecting untold numbers of families from pain and heartbreak for years to come."

Mrs. Obama quickly reached out on Twitter, thanking CVS, adding, “now we can all breathe a little easier, and
our families can live healthier.”

An interesting little factoid about CVS is that it is really a Pharmacy Benefits Management company called
CVS
Caremark.
That's right. The chain everyone knows so well is, in actuality, a health care firm that just happens to
operate a retail store as well.

In light of that, it seems oxymoronic for a health care firm to sell cigarettes, which are so detrimental to the
health of citizens, in the first place.

The fact that the Obamas are praising CVS, though, makes a lot of sense, since the president’s extended
struggle to kick his smoking habit made headlines.

According to 2011 statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 43.8
million people, or 19% of all adults, smoke cigarettes.

Perhaps the decision of CVS executives will influence others to make healthier choices.

So far, however, chains like Walgreens and Rite-Aid, continue the sale of cigarettes.
