Many who tuned in to watch the kickoff episode of BET’s “Sunday Best” Season 6, hoping to experience
some of the finest gospel singing voices of our time, came away feeling let down. The disappointment was
not for lack of talent, but, according to complainers, compassion, humility and kindness were at an all-time
low from the judges.

The no-holds-barred critiques, snarky remarks and sometimes, Simon Cowell-esque crudeness of the most
talked about two—Donnie McClurkin and Kim Burrell—rubbed certain offended viewers the wrong way.

“Where is the love? How can they be so mean? They’re worse than judges on secular shows!” wrote EEW
Magazine reader, Dana, who said someone needs to “address the ugliness” on the show.

She continued, “How can they be a witness for Christ and His love when they treat people with lack of dignity
and respect? This has [to] stop!”

Some of the backlash poured out onto Twitter, with tweeters using adjectives like “rude” and “uppity” to
describe the judges’ commentary.

Though some of the public reviews of the big wigs making the final determinations about who stayed or went
home, was less than stellar, McClurkin and Burrell likely won’t lose any sleep over it.

“When critiques come in unfavorable...we've got to take it just as we give it,” responded McClurkin on his
Twitter page, adding that viewer “opinions, good or bad, are valued.”

Burrell added to the social networking buzz, “I'm in the airport and I can't see the show. I told y'all. These
contestants tried it. It's called Sunday BEST!”

Even though it is a singing competition and by its very nature demands excellence, the question comes up
every year: should there be a difference in the way gospel music ministers are handled versus mainstream
entertainers?

Should the approach of the authority figures vary from shows like American Idol, X Factor, or The Voice?
Does God get any glory through reality competitions, or does flesh, pride, and showiness take the place of
His true praise?
