EEW MAGAZINE NEWS:: CONTROVERSY

There are many bizarre things people do in the name of God, but this
one just might take the cake. There is a growing movement called
“Christian Domestic Discipline” which says the husband, as the head of
the household, must enforce his authority by spanking his wife.
Essentially, it is submission run amuck.

“He has the God-given right to spank his wife if she misbehaves,”
explained Whoopi Goldberg on a recent episode of ABC’s “The View.”

Outraged, Christian co-host Sherri Shepherd chimed in, “I just want to
put out there, that is not a Christian movement. First of all, I get so
tired of people, just because they say they’re Christian and they have
this movement [it is a Christian thing]. That is not a Christian
movement, so we’re not owning that.”

Ephesians 5:25 NLT says, “For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave
up his life for her.” Nowhere is husbands administering beatings to their wives for misbehavior found in scripture.

"That is not even biblical. In the Bible there is a scripture that says ‘spare the rod, spoil the child,’” Shepherd
pointed out, although this is inaccurate. Actually, though this is often attributed to Christian scripture, the
popular quote was first written in a poem by Samuel Butler in 1664.

However, there is a biblical verse in Proverbs 13:24 that says, “Whoever spares the rod hates their children,
but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them.” (NIV)

“It don’t say ‘spare the rod, spoil the wife,’ Shepherd continued. “That is not biblical at all. So, that is not a
Christian thing.”
