The BET Awards highlight the best-selling and most widely known black
mainstream entertainers, rising stars, and iconic figures—the latter, who reached
the apex of their careers years ago, while earning the undying respect of their
peers.
Although gospel is only a blip at these annual events, it is worth noting who, on
the Lord’s side, is nominated to receive honors.
At the 2013 BET Awards, hosted by Chris Tucker, set to air Sunday, June 30, 2013,
there are five nominees for Best Gospel Artist: Deitrick Haddon, Lecrae, Tamela
Mann, Mary Mary, and Marvin Sapp.
Even though Christian music fans are quite happy to hear that some of their
favorite gospel performers are receiving recognition, most won’t be bothering to
tune in for the show.

When the Celebration of Gospel takes place annually, producers make sure to cram R&B acts on the show—even mixing
in secular songs to be sung by gospel acts.
But when it comes to awards shows and programs dedicated to mainstream acts, why don’t gospel artists get top billing
there too, if everything is to be kept fair and equal?
Well, that’s just the thing.
