Donnie McClurkin Performs 'I Need You' & Admits
He Was Suicidal on 'The Real'
On Wednesday, September 28, GRAMMY® Award-winning gospel artist Donnie McClurkin delivers a
moving performance of his new single “I Need You” and admits the inspiration behind the song that
had him contemplating suicide.

"The song really came from a series of depressions I was going through. I know it’s not you know,
appropriate to say," said the 56-year-old, acknowledging the stigmatization of depression in the
church.

But co-host Adrienne Bailon chimed in, " It’s real."

McClurkin continued, "But I was going through a series of depressions. My mother, my father, my
cousins, my aunts, my niece all in two years died. My mom and dad died ten years, ten months a part.
And it left me at the point of really… thinking, hoping to die next, suicidal."

In 2013, approximately 10 months after losing his mother, Frances McClurkin, 79, due to
complications from a massive heart attack on Jan. 18, the pastor of the Freeport, NY-based
Perfecting Faith Church said goodbye to his father, Donald Andy McClurkin, Sr.

The 79-year-old family patriarch died in the wee hours of the morning on Nov. 13 of acute myocardial
infarction, a leading cause of death worldwide. Commonly known as a heart attack, AMI occurs when
there is a blockage of oxygen‐filled blood flow towards a part of the heart, eventually causing it to
become damaged, and die.

Then, in March 2015,  his sister, Cheryl “Cheri” McClurkin’s also died from complications of a massive
coronary heart attack. In December of that same year, his 13-year-old niece Trinity Mableton, had a
seizure in her sleep and died.

He is now channeling that pain through his music ministry.
