As Ecclesiastes 1:9 says, “There is nothing new under the sun.” Greed and the glorification of wealth have been spiritual issues for ages.
Nowadays, however, with the flourishing of social media, others’ desire to amass wealth and flaunt it for the masses to see is simply magnified. Here are 5 scriptures to help you avoid the greed trap rooted in love of money.
1. 1 Timothy 6:9(ESV) "But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction."
Don't yearn to be rich, learn to be content with whatever you have. If you chase after money with all your heart, you will lower your moral standards just to get it. Cupidity is stupidity.
2. Ecclesiastes 5:10 (NIV) "Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless."
Do not lust after money, because it can never fulfill you; only God can make you whole. You might rack up a good deal of cash-- but if you spend all your time trying to make a dollar, you may end up externally rich, yet you will be spiritually poor.
3. Matthew 19:24 (NLT) "I'll say it again--it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!"
Money is power, influence, and overall wealth. Don't become so enamored with the possibilities money offers that you lose sight of what is truly important. 1 Corinthians 6:10 says that the greedy will not inherit the kingdom of God. Don't trade in your eternal blessing for temporary wealth.
4. Hebrews 13:5 (NIV) "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'"
We have no guarantee that the money we save up today will be here tomorrow, but God is always with us. He cannot be stolen, spent, or badly budgeted. Put your trust in the Lord, who is guaranteed to be there when you need him.
5. 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NIV) "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
The best way to defeat greed is to give to others. If God blesses you with a generous amount of money, give some away. When the Lord blesses us, it is so we can be a blessing to others. Don't hoard all your earnings for yourself, share with those less fortunate.
Refer to these scriptures when you need to combat greed, and find many more like them! The answer to every struggle we face can be found in the word of God.
