Wealth, power, influence: Who’s the greatest among us?

A couple days ago, Forbes released its list of “American’s Wealthiest Celebrities,” celebrating the billion
dollar fortunes of Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Steven Spielberg and more.

By today’s standards, the wealthiest, most well-known personalities are accepted as the greatest. The
people who flaunt their riches, and live off of the praise and applause of others, are to be revered and
celebrated.

Though all those put on a pedestal by Forbes don’t necessarily actively seek the limelight, there are
plenty that do.

Those who make themselves center stage at every charity event, supposedly to “draw attention to those
in need,” are commended as the greatest among us. But the way to greatness in the world is not the way
to greatness in heaven.

If you want to be great in God’s kingdom, you must be the least. If you want to be first, you have to be
last. Matthew 20:26 says (ESV), “…Whoever would be great among you must be your servant.”

Your greatness in the kingdom is determined by your willingness to serve. When your charity isn’t always
a topic of conversation, but a silent moment of kindness to someone in need, God calls you great
(Matthew 6:3-4).

When you do not use your wealth or influence to increase yourself, but to bless others with the blessings
you have received, God calls you great (Philippians 2:3-4).

When you serve God through serving people; when you follow the example of Jesus (Matthew 20:27-
28); when you love others to the point that you would give up all the world has to offer just to see God
save their soul through one of your good deeds, then you are great in the kingdom of heaven.

So, put yourself aside, and make serving others your top priority.

This is the way to true greatness.
