You can wait: 5 practical yet spiritually-grounded tips to
help you remain sexually pure

With the world touting premarital sex as fun, perfectly healthy and natural, and as a casual activity,
sexual purity seems an impossible standard to uphold.

But abstinence is possible. There are plenty of sanctified singles waiting and resisting fornication
out there and I am one of them. Here are 5 tips to help you stay pure:

#1 Put God first. Jesus says in John 14:15 (ESV), “If you love me, you will keep my
commandments.” When you love God above all else and desire to please Him, your will to
stay pure will be that much stronger. It’s easier to follow through on an action when there is a
strong feeling urging you toward it; if your will to please God is greater than your desire to do
dirty, you are on the road to success.

#2 Mind what you listen to. Believe it or not, music is powerful. What you listen to
influences what you think, and therefore what you do. Thoughts precede actions, so if you
have a multitude of lyrics about sex floating around in your head, you are setting yourself up
for failure. Listen to clean songs—and no, I don’t mean tunes with explicit content edited out,
but worship music. Songs that will encourage you in your faith, and especially in your wait.

#3 What are you watching? What you see has just as great an influence on you as what
you allow yourself to listen to. Racy music videos, TV shows about sexual affairs, and porn
are to be avoided. Keep your visual entertainment, including books, as wholesome as you
possibly can. You can’t avoid everything, but you can pick and choose what shows you give
your attention to, and what books or magazines you read.

#4 Be careful who you hang out with. The people we hang around reflect either who we
are or who we will become. Someone who aspires to fly will never get off the ground if they
are weighed down by people who say it’s impossible. Likewise, you can’t expect to remain
pure if everyone you associate with is always telling you that abstinence is unrealistic, uppity,
or old-fashioned. “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character”- 1 Corinthians
15:33 (NIV). Make sure your inner circle is filled with more good than bad.

#5 Don’t put yourself in compromising situations. Yes, God always makes a way out of
temptation—but being human, we often ignore the exit. Don’t overestimate yourself. If you
are working towards purity, don’t take part in anything that will sexually stimulate you. Even if
it is something simple, such as kissing, don’t do it if it will make your mind go places it shouldn’
    t. Avoid not only certain actions, but certain environments as well. Stay away from wild
parties, or late nights alone with your significant other. Know yourself and what you can
handle, and stick to your convictions no matter what anyone else says.

This handful of tips is what I have to offer, and I pray that they help you on your purity walk.
